 PDF/X-1a - CMYK, Spot color
 PDF/X-3  - accepts calibrated RGB, CIELAB color
 PDF/X-4  - has the same color management and International Color Consortium(ICC) color specification as PDF/X-3
 PDF/A-1b - converts all colors to either CMYK or RGB

트랩 설정(Trap Presets) 기능

트랩 설정 기능은 Adobe In-RIP Trapping에 기초한 어도비 포스트스크립트 기술을 응용하여 새로운 트랩을 만들거나 트랩을 수정할 수 있도록 한다.
이 기능은 PDF 문서에 있는 상호 교차하거나 인접한 색상 영역 간에 발생하는 트러블을 제거하는데, 현재 열려 있는 문서들의 색상 영역에 트랩 설정값을 변경할 수 있게 한다. 트랩 기본 설정값이나 사용자가 정의하여 만든 트랩은 PDF 문서에 적용되어 분판 출력을 가능하게 하지만, 이러한 설정값이 별도로 PDF 문서를 수정하여 저장하지는 않는다.

분판 미리보기(Output Preview) 기능

분판 미리보기 기능은 Adobe Acrobat 6에서 처음 선보인 것으로, 현재 열려 있는 PDF 문서의 컬러 색상 정보를 미리 확인, 교정하는 기능을 제공했다. 그런데 이 기능은 Adobe Acrobat 7에서 기존의 기본 기능들 외에 여러 가지 옵션들을 갖추게 되었다.
우선 눈에 띄는 옵션으로는 표준 색상 ICC 프로필에 따라 최종 출력 결과를 미리 시뮬레이션해 볼 수 있는 기능과 특정 컬러 영역들(RGB, Device CMYK, Spot Color 등)만 선택적으로 볼 수 있는 기능이다. 또한 오버프린트(Overprint)에 의한 색상 변화를 미리 예측할 수 있도록 미리보기가 가능하다. Preview 팝업 메뉴에서 Separation을 선택하면 현재 문서의 기본 CMYK 색상 정보 및 별색 정보를 미리볼 수 있으며 특정 색상만 미리보기하거나 교정보는 것도 가능하다. Preview 팝업 메뉴에서 Color Warnings를 선택하면 색상 영역의 오버프린트 상황을 미리 볼 수 있게 된다. 이러한 미리보기 기능을 이용하면 PDF 문서에 포함된 색상 정보를 사전에 확인하여 출력 결과를 예측하고 정교한 출력을 하는 데 많은 도움이 된다. 예를 들어 별색(Spot Color)이 포함되어 있는 문서의 경우 별색을 별도판으로 출력할지 아니면 CMYK 색상으로 프로세싱할지 사전에 결정할 수 있게 한다. 기존에 포스트스크립트 파일을 출력하는 경우에는 파일 RIPping 이후에 색상 정보를 확인, 별색이나 특정 색상 정보의 출력 방식을 결정했는데, 이에 비해 Adobe Acrobat 7의 미리보기 기능을 이용하면 PDF 파일은 RIPping 이전에 사전 교정이 가능하기 때문에 작업자에게 편의와 융통성을 부여하고 정확한 출력 결과를 예측할 수 있도록 하는 등 여러 가지로 도움을 준다.

사전 교정(Preflight) 기능

사전 교정 기능은 Adobe Acrobat 6에서 처음 선보인 후 PDF 파일의 출력 교정 기능으로 널리 사용되어 왔다. 그전에는 Enfocus사의 Pitstop과 같은 Adobe Acrobat용 플러그인을 사용해야만 가능했던 기능이었기 때문에, 사전 교정 기능은 특히 PDF 출력 업무를 담당하는 실무자들에게 많은 인기를 누렸다. Adobe Acrobat 7에서는 사전 교정 기능에 보다 편리한 기능들을 새롭게 추가했으며, 인터페이스가 사용자 편의를 고려해 대폭 개선되었다. 그래서 Adobe Acrobat 6의 사전 교정 기능을 이용해 본 사용자라면 Adobe Acrobat 7에서는 전혀 새로운 기능을 보는 듯한 느낌이 들 수도 있다. 인터페이스도 바뀌고 기능도 많이 추가되었기 때문이다. [그림 7]과 같이 사전 교정 기능의 초기 윈도우에서는 미리 구성한 프로필들이 나타난다. 작업자는 이 프로필들을 그대로 사용할 수도 있지만 작업에 적합한 프로필을 직접 만들어 사용할 수도 있다.

새로운 교정 프로필을 만들려면 초기 윈도우에서 ‘Edit’ 버튼을 클릭하면 되는데, 그럴 경우 기존에 구성되어 있던 프로필을 수정하거나 새로운 프로필을 만들 수 있는 윈도우가 나타난다. 이 윈도우에서 PDF 파일에 적용할 프로필을 사용자가 직접 구성하여 이용할 수 있다. Adobe Acrobat 7의 새로운 기능인 교정 결과의 리포트 기능은 매우 직관적이다. 이전 버전에서는 리포트 결과 파일을 PDF 파일로 별도 제작해 저장하는 정도였지만 Adobe Acrobat 7에서는 [그림 9]와 같이 교정 결과를 해당 문서의 오브젝트에 주석으로 추가해 저장함으로써 좀더 빠르게 출력 관련 문제가 예상되는 부분을 사전 점검할 수 있게 해 준다.

컬러 변환(Convert Colors) 기능

Adobe Acrobat 7에는 PDF 파일의 컬러 영역을 변환시켜 주는 기능이 새롭게 추가되었다. PDF 파일의 컬러를 변환하기 위해서는 이전에는 Quite A Box Of Tricks이나 Pitstop 등의 플러그인을 이용해야 했지만, Adobe Acrobat 7에서는 기본 기능을 이용해 가능하게 된 것이다.
Adobe Acrobat 7의 컬러 변환 기능은 Device CMYK, Device RGB, Device Gray 그리고 별색을 변환하는 기능을 제공한다. 우선 변환할 도큐멘트 컬러를 선택하고 Action에서 Convert 명령을 선택한다. Destination Space에서 적용할 컬러 프로필을 선택하고 OK 버튼을 클릭하면 선택한 색상 영역이 변환된다.
변환된 결과의 미리보기가 불가능하며 컬러가 도큐멘트에 그대로 적용되어 원본 상태로 복귀할 수 없으므로 컬러 변환 기능을 사용하려면 원본의 복사본을 만들어 이용하도록 한다.
컬러 변환 기능은 페이지 단위로 적용되기 때문에 특정 이미지 오브젝트나 텍스트에만 선별적으로 사용할 수 없다. PDF 도큐멘트 내의 특정 이미지 오브젝트나 텍스트의 컬러를 수정, 편집하려면 Enfocus사의 Pitstop을 사용해야만 한다.
Adobe Acrobat 7의 컬러 변환 기능은 MS Word 등 Windows 계열의 응용프로그램에서 제작한 RGB 계열의 PDF 문서를 컬러 출력하기 위하여 CMYK 모드로 전환하는 용도로 적합할 것으로 보인다.

변환할 도큐멘트 컬러를 선택하고 Action에서 Convert 명령을 선택한 후 Destination Space에서 적용할 컬러 프로필을 선택하고 OK 버튼을 클릭하면 선택한 색상 영역이 변환된다

잉크 매니저(Ink Manager) 기능

잉크 매니저 기능은 Adobe InDesign에는 포함되어 있었으나 Adobe Acrobat에서는 7 버전에서야 새롭게 추가되었다. 이 기능은 현재 열려 있는 PDF 파일의 색상 정보에 따른 잉크 농도값을 사전에 보여 주며, 이러한 값들을 사용자가 조정하여 최종 출력 전에 또는 컬러 변환 기능을 사용하기 전에 미리보기할 수 있도록 한다.
주의할 점은 여기서 조정한 컬러 잉크값은 실제 PDF 파일에 저장되지는 않으며 단순히 컬러 잉크값을 변경하여 최종 출력 상태를 미리보여 주는 것이라는 점이다. 예를 들어 작업 윈도우에서 Convert All Spots to Process 옵션을 체크하면 PDF 파일에 포함되어 있는 별색을 모두 CMYK로 프로세싱하여 미리볼 수 있게 해 준다.

프린터 마크 추가(Add Printer Marks) 기능

프린터 마크 추가 기능은 PDF 파일의 페이지들을 필름 출력할 때 차후 필요한 재단선이나 컬러바 등의 프린터 마크를 삽입, 추가할 수 있게 해 준다.

Fix Hairlines 기능

Fix Hairlines 기능은 특정 크기 이하의 텍스트나 오브젝트의 외곽선이 출력시 트러블을 일으킬 가능성이 있을 때 그것을 예방하기 위하여 선 두께를 보정하는 기능이다.

JDF Job Definitions 기능

Adobe Acrobat 7은 PDF 문서에 포함되어 있는 JDF(Job Definition Format)를 편집하거나 추가하는 기능을 제공한다. 즉 PDF 기반의 출력 웍플로어를 사용하는 경우 PDF 문서 내에 포함된 출력 및 인쇄 관련 작업 지시를 위한 정보를 가공하여 사용할 수 있게 한다.

PDF 최적화(PDF Optimizer) 기능

Adobe Acrobat 7의 PDF 최적화 기능은 이전 6 버전과 유사하다. 단 PDF 문서에 사용한 투명 효과를 출력시 보정해 주는 부분 등은 추가되었다.

Transparency Flattening 기능

Transparency Flattening 기능은 Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional 버전에서 새롭게 추가되었다. Adobe Acrobat 6 버전에서는 단순히 투명 오브젝트의 인쇄 결과를 미리보여 줬지만, Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional에서 이 기능을 적용하면 투명 오브젝트를 평탄화시켜 줄 수 있다. 그림 16과 같이 Flattener Preview 윈도우에서는 투명 오브젝트 영역을 붉은색으로 표시해서 보여 주며 나머지 영역은 그레이스케일 상태로 보여 준다. 이러한 정보를 이용하여 PDF 문서를 출력하기 전에 투명 옵션을 수정할 수 있도록 해 준다.

Let me introduce a book that might be helpful for those who are preparing for ACE certificate or want to learn how to use Acrobat interfaces.

• Adobe PDF preserves the exact layout, fonts, and text formatting of electronic documents, regardless of the computer system or platform used to view these documents.                          PDF파일을 열기 위해서 어떤 컴퓨터 시스템이나 플랫폼을 사용하든, 정확한 레이아웃과 폰트 그리고 전자문서의 텍스트 편집을 보존해준다.

• PDF documents can contain multiple languages, such as Japanese and English, on the same page.    다른 언어들을 같은 페이지에 표현할 수 있다.

• PDF documents print predictably with proper margins and page breaks.    페이지 경계선과 나눔선으로 프린트 할 것을 예상할 수 있다.

• PDF files can be secured to prevent undesired changes or printing, or to limit accesses to confidential documents.          기밀 문서에 대한 접근을 제한하고 보안설정 함으로써 원치않는 정정이나 프린트를 예방할 수 있다.

clear scan vs. searchable image

OCR Text Recognition중 clearscan과 searchable image의 차이를 잘 설명한글을 포스팅 했습니다.



clearscan을 searchable image와 비교했을 때 결국은 화질도 좋고 인쇄속도 상대적으로 빠르다는것을 알 수 있는데요, 이유는 searchable image는 단순히 그림위에 글자올리는 방식이지만 clearscan은 글자 이미지를 부드러운 벡터로 변환을 시켜주는 원리를 사용하기 때문이라고 합니다.

Searchable Image - keeps the original image and places an invisible text layer over it.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts scanned paper documents into searchable PDF documents. This technology has been available in Acrobat for about ten years. While OCR accuracy and language support have improved over the years, the default OCR "flavor"— Searchable Image— was the only useful choice.
Searchable Image retains the underlying scanned image and adds an invisible layer of text on top, which may be selected:

Searchable Image OCR has some shortcomings:

1. File Size
   For 300 dpi black and white scans, a typical file size is 15-40K per page. Scanning at higher resolutions (600 dpi Vs. 300 dpi) increases file size about three to four times.
2. Print Speed
   Because of the image-heavy content, searchable image PDFs can take a long time to print.
3. Visual Quality
   At 300 dpi, scanned documents are easily distinguishable in quality from computer-generated files.

In Acrobat 9, Adobe engineers added a new flavor of OCR called ClearScan. ClearScan offers improved text quality with a decrease in file size:

I've recently completed some benchmarking which shows dramatic file size decreases and quality gains. Read on to learn about size comparisons, how to use ClearScan OCR and a bit more about how it all works.

Testing Methodology

I created two test documents:

• 78-page image-only PDF document scanned at 300 dpi
• 78-page image-only PDF document scanned at 600 dpi

I ran OCR and compared file sizes on my ThinkPad W500. The test machine ran Vista Enterprise in 32-bit mode and has 4GB of RAM. In addition to Acrobat, I also had Excel running. The W500 is a current model laptop which runs an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU at 2.8 GHz. The test machine has an IBM standard 320GB laptop hard drive running at 7200 rpm.

At 300 dpi, ClearScan offered improved visual quality at about one-third the total file size. At 600 dpi, the ClearScan file was seven times smaller and looked better.

How does ClearScan work?

ClearScan works by turning the images which represent text characters on the page into smoothed vector outlines. Each character on the page is compared and all matching characters are replaced with a an outline character:

ClearScan does not replace the font with your system fonts. Rather, a custom font it is created to match the visual appearance of the pixels. In fact, if you run ClearScan OCR and choose File—> Document Properties and click on the Fonts tab, you'll see that custom fonts are created:

Besides better visual appearance, print time is reduced. Instead of sending large images to the printer, Acrobat can send the compact font information instead.

How can I try ClearScan OCR?

ClearScan OCR is not the default in Acrobat 9, so you'll need to change a setting to use it. Here's how.

1. Choose: Document—> OCR Text Recognition—> Recognize Text using OCR . . .
2. Click the Edit . . . button in the OCR window:
   
3. Change the PDF Output Style to ClearScan.
   
4. Click OK twice to OCR the document.

ClearScan Q&A

Here are a few answers to the most common questions about ClearScan OCR.

1. Is OCR accuracy any different between ClearScan and Searchable Image styles?
   No. The accuracy will be identical for input files of the same dpi. However, since a ClearScan files are so much smaller, you might consider using a 600 dpi input file as a starting point since there is little downside other than processing time.
2. Can I make changes to the text in a ClearScan file?
   No. The Touchup Text Tool does not currently work on ClearScan files.
3. Are ClearScan files admissible in court?
   To our knowledge, there has never been a challenge. ClearScan files are generally an accurate representation of the original document.
4. What fonts does ClearScan use?
   ClearScan creates a custom font to match the character shape. It does not rely on system fonts or any other font that may be installed on your system.
5. Are ClearScan files always smaller?
   For single page typical legal documents, you may not see much difference in file size. Multiple page documents will show the greatest file size reduction. Documents which vary greatly in the type and number of fonts will show less return on file size.
6. Is ClearScan slower than Searchable Image OCR?
   No. The speed is virtually identical.
   vWhat is the benefit of scanning at 600 dpi then using ClearScan?
   Since ClearScan bases its shapes on the original image, a 600 dpi input file yields better looking text than one scanned at 300 dpi:

7. Can I re-OCR a Searchable Image file to turn it into a ClearScan file?
   Yes.
8. Can I turn a ClearScan file into a Searchable Image file?

TEDxCUK - Let's get involved and motivated

TEDx event in Catholic university of Korea

The First TEDxCUK event was held in Songsim Convention center on Dec.3 2010 and around 100 people gathered and enjoyed watching inspiring TEDxCUK event.

I've seen a couple of TEDx events in Ewha women university, Kwanghwamun and Myeongdong and a lot of inspiring TED talks motivated me to launch TEDx event in my college. I started looking for students who could help me organzing TEDxCUK event and finally around 15 poeple gathered together and that's how it began.

Let's get involved and motivated

The maing theme of the first event goes like this. Many college students, office workers, and other people have their different experiences and great ideas. However, how many are there who deliver their own ideas to audience effectively, so that they can be inspired? TEDxCUK was made to provide an opportunity for many college students accustomed passive way of living to get them involved and motivated. Like, instead of having their beautiful fish in their own fish bowl, having them swim around with other beautiful fish in a big fish tank, we would like to provide an opportunity where different ideas swim around together in the same place so that they can be spread to other people and inspire them. As Gregory Berns put it, “A person can have the greatest idea in the world, but if that person can’t convince enough other people, it doesn’t matter”, we would like to expect people to exchange their ideas worth spreading so that people can feel “TEDxCUK-like moment”.

많은 대학생들과 직장인들 그리고 다른 많은 사람들은 다양한 경험을 하고 저마다 멋진 아이디어를 가지고 있습니다. 하지만 그것을 제대로 청중에게 표현하고 그들에게 영감과 새로운 아이디어를 선사해주는 이는 얼마나 될까요? TEDxCUK는 수동적인 태도에 길들여져 있는 많은 대학생들을 참여하게 하고 그들에게 열정을 줄 수 있는 기회를 만들어 보고자 하는 생각에서 만들어졌습니다. 자신의 조그만 어항속에 한 마리 아름다운 물고기를 간직하기 보단, 커다란 어항에 자신의 물고기를 다른 물고기와 같이 어울려 놀게하여 보는이에게 더 큰 즐거움을 줄 수 있듯이, 각각의 다양한 아이디어가 한 장소에서 만나 보다 많은 이들에게 퍼져 나갈수 있고 영감을 줄 수 있는 기회를 만들고자 합니다. 그레고리 번즈는 이렇게 말합니다. “누구나 멋진 생각을 가질 수 있지만 그것을 남에게 효과적으로 표현하지 못하면 아무 쓸모없다.” 그레고리 번즈의 생각처럼 우리가 가지고있는 퍼트릴 만한 가치가 있는 아이디어를 표현할 수 있게 하고, 그럼으로써 많은 이들에게 ‘TEDxCUK 같은 느낌’을 공유하려 합니다.

Setting up the stage 

we tried to make it look like a great movie that captivates the audience. We needed to differentiate it from normal classes where students usually get bored enough to fall asleep. To make it catchy, setting up the stage was one of the most important things that I can't neglect.

• lights- we set up the light on the stage so the audience feel more comfortable when watching speakers speaking.
• logo - it took all through the night to make this but it worth it.

Sir Ken Robinson - Do school kill creativity?
we showed the audience a TED talk video of Sir Ken Robinson whose speech is mainly about revolution in education. I thought this was the right video for the audience because 95% of them were college students many of whom were so obssessed with getting a high GPA, certificates and TOEIC score that directly is realted to getting a job in a Korean society. Our intention of showing this video was to have them re-think about the meaning of their lives. To be more specific, we wanted to encourage them to pursue what they like to do instead of following other people just preparing for English tests to get a job.



One of my favorie quote of his is "don't be frightened of being wrong... if you are not prepared to be wrong, you'll be never come up with anything original" Apparently, many Korean college students feel insecure of current job market and instead of looking for their future goals, challenging and going through the obstacles, they stuck in the studying room repeating the same TOEIC tests again and again. Every and each one of us has our own talent and we need to find and develop them. So we invited 5 different speakers who followed their passion in their respective fields, and what's the reaction of the audience?

They seemed attracted by inspring speakers all through the session and after the end of the event, they left the comments saying "it was a great TEDxCUK event. It's amazing that it's the first event. Looking forward to the next one" It was one of the most satisfactory moments in my life.

Looking forward to next event
The second TEDxCUK event is planned to to be held in middle of May but it's tantative. Hopefully, I can make the more inspiring moments with other TEDxCUK organizers in the next event.
